Arapaho Glacier, United States
The Arapaho Glacier, in the Rocky Mountains, is the largest glacier in the U.S. state of Colorado and the source of much of the water used by the city of Boulder. The glacier has receded dramatically since it was first photographed in 1898 and may disappear completely by the end of this century (NASA 2016; Barnett 2018). In conjunction with Weather Report: Art and Climate Change, on view at the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art in 2007, the local artist Jane McMahan built a solar-powered life-support machine for a fragment of the rapidly shrinking mass of ice.
