Sissel Marie Tonn

Sissel Marie Tonn is an artist and researcher investigates how artistic interventions can build intimate psychological connections between humans and peatland ecosystems.

Sissel Marie Tonn is a Danish artist and researcher working at the intersection of multimedia art, ecology and technology. Her practice investigates how humans perceive and relate to the environments we inhabit, asking where we perceive our to bodies end and the world around us to begin.

Through installations, sensory interfaces, storytelling and interdisciplinary collaborations, Sissel explores how ecological processes become perceptible through embodied experiences, and how artistic practices might reshape our relationships with the ecologies of which we are part. Her work brings together artistic experimentation and scientific research, collaborating with ecologists, immunologists, designers and other artists.

Her recent series Sphagnum Time explores the ecological and cultural significance of raised sphagnum bogs, bringing together peatland science, material experimentation and multi-media storytelling to imagine how we might relate differently to these vulnerable ecosystems.

Sissel is currently a PhD candidate within the JUST ART consortium at the University of Groningen.
