Martha-Cecilia Dietrich

Martha-Cecilia Dietrich is a visual anthropologist and filmmaker at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), exploring environmental and social justice, memory, the Rights of Nature, and other-than-human experiences through collaborative audiovisual research.

Martha-Cecilia Dietrich is Assistant Professor of visual anthropology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA). Her research explores environmental and social justice, memory, the Rights of Nature, and multispecies relations through collaborative and audiovisual approaches. Working across anthropology, visual media, and artistic research, she examines how film and creative practices can make visible contested landscapes, ecological transformations, and diverse forms of human and other-than-human agency.

She is the director of Unquiet Ground (2026) and co-editor of Empirical Art: Filmmaking for Fieldwork in Practice (Lawrence and Dietrich 2025). Her work engages with the political and ethical possibilities of representing more-than-human worlds. Her ethnographic and audiovisual research combines documentary filmmaking, collaborative methodologies, and critical engagements with place, memory, and socio-ecological change.

At the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Dietrich teaches visual anthropology and ethnographic documentary, including courses exploring multispecies justice and experimental approaches to ethnographic filmmaking. Her current research investigates how artistic and ethnographic practices can contribute to new imaginaries of justice in the context of ecological crises, with particular attention to the rights and subjectivities of more-than-human beings.
