Aldo Esparza Ramos

Aldo Esparza Ramos is a PhD candidate researching Art and Soil Ecologies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His practice connects art, environmentalism, social practices, and Indigenous Earth knowledges.

Aldo Esparza Ramos is an artistic researcher and PhD candidate in Art and Soil Ecologies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, within the JUST ART research consortium. His research investigates how artistic practices can cultivate more attentive and regenerative relationships with soil and living territories, bringing Indigenous Earth knowledges, environmental humanities, and artistic research into dialogue.

Aldo’s practice is grounded in community-based and relational forms of knowledge-making. Through installations, storytelling, participatory performances, weaving, cooking, and land-based practices, he creates spaces for encounters between human and more-than-human worlds. His work explores art as a form of listening, social healing, and re-existence, with relationality taking precedence over the artwork itself.

He graduated from ArtEZ Base for Experimental Art Research with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art (2016) and completed the Master’s program at the Dutch Art Institute (DAI) in 2018. From 2019 to 2021, he was a resident at the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam, where his practice developed through artistic research and international exchange.

Aldo is co-founder of Pluriversity Umunukunu (Pluriversity Weavers), developed in collaboration with the Iku (Arhuaco), and Weaving Realities, a collective exploring alternative ways of relating to the living Earth through artistic and communal practices.
