Nienke Zweers

As a Scientist Integrator at TNO, Nienke combines systems thinking, human-centred design and engineering to advance fair and effective climate and energy transitions that put people, their needs, and lived experiences first.

Nienke Zweers is a researcher at TNO Energy and Material Transition, focusing on how people experience and shape climate transitions, with particular attention to justice, participation, and systems thinking approaches.

With a background spanning creative arts, industrial design engineering, and industrial ecology, Nienke brings together design and engineering perspectives to creatively address complex sustainability challenges. She uses systems thinking and an interdisciplinary approach to understand how people, technologies, policies, and their environments interact and shape one another over time.

Nienke is driven by a curiosity for how complex systems shape societal change. She combines systems thinking with participatory and human-centered approaches to understand different perspectives, motivations, and everyday realities, while exploring how problems can be reframed to reveal new possibilities for change. Her ambition is to contribute to sustainability transitions that are environmentally effective, socially just, and grounded in people’s everyday realities.
